the 10 hiking Essentials 

10 Essentials- these are things that should be brought on every hike.
*There are a couple of additions for winter hiking.
  1. Navigation (map, compass, personal beacon, downloaded offline maps)
  2. Headlamp and extra batteries
  3. Sun protection (hat, sunscreen-reef safe, with Zinc?, clothing with SPF, sunglasses)
  4. First aid (at least a few bandages, blister care, pain meds, bug spray, wound care)
  5. Knife
  6. Fire (waterproof matches, lighter, stove if out all day)
  7. Emergency shelter (bivy, emergency blanket)
  8. Extra food (more than you think you’ll eat
  9. Extra water and/or a way to filter water
  10. Extra clothing (rain gear, warmer layer)
  11. Extra socks*
  12. Some kind of traction like YakTrax, microspikes or snowshoes (if you live in a place that gets snow)*

leave no trace principles

  • Plan ahead and prepare.
  • Travel and camp on durable surfaces.
  • Dispose of waste properly.
  • Leave what you find.
  • Minimize campfire impacts (be careful with fire).
  • Respect wildlife.
  • Be considerate of other visitors.
